Hi I came to this via Security Garden (Corrine MVP) who had a link to Donna’s Security page who had a link to this page. As I am a member of of winvistaclub forum and this is such an import piece of security I would like to mention it there with a direct link to you if that is ok. This is really a great product that needs a wider audience

Old McDonald: Hi there and welcome here. You’re free to mention it there if you would like to do so and yeah, it does help to get more people to try out Autorun Eater. Thank you!

Thanks for the effort. My Mcafee program still recognizes this as a program to delete. I had to disable everything and run it, and then as soon as I enabled McAfee, it removed AE. I hope they get around to fixing that, but somehow I doubt it.

Anyway, when I ran the program, there was no progress bar or anything to tell me when it would finish. Is this just a program that you are supposed to keep running indefinitely? If this is the case, it worries me that only when I chose to “exit”, did the results come up and prompt me to delete an autorun.inf file.

Old McDonald: About the McAfee problem, we will try to contact them again and solve it.

Also sorry for the confusion that arises from the so called ’scanning’ status. Autorun Eater actually monitors and not scans like what an antivirus software does, with the progress bar and everything. It monitors the drives in real-time and when a suspicious file is found, only then a warning message appears. So we recommend you allow Autorun Eater to run at all times.

I hope that answers your confusion, if not, please feel to reply. Thank you!

    hi Old McDonald!
    i love this program :)
but i have a question, which version is not using high CPU usage?
since i use Intel Atom, CPU usage is a big deal :D

    thank you!

Old McDonald: Try the lastest version(v2.3) :)

  6. António Says:

Worm was detected yesterday by AVG DB 270.10.5/1882, which is the last update. I will reinstall Autorun Eater and see what happens.
Thank you so much for the help.

    Regards.

Old McDonald: Seems to be fine on my computer with AVG running. You’re welcome! :)

  7. António Says:

    Hi!
After removing a Trojan DNS changer, problems on running SpywareBlaster are now fixed.
On 30th Nov I downloaded and installed Autorun Eater v2.3 which ran ok till today when AVG detected Worm/Autoit.LBH on C:\Programs\Autorun Eater\oldmacdonald.exe. Is this true or a false positive? Can you help me, please?

Old McDonald: It is a false positive which has been fixed by AVG. Try reinstalling Autorun Eater again and see if problem persists.

  8. António Says:

Wallpaper and desktop icons, of course. Malware? Well I’m using SpywareTerminator, COMODO firewall and AVG, and no malware is detected at least so far. As I said before there’s nothing to do.
    Ok, I’ll download v2.3.
    Best regards.

Old McDonald: If you can do without SpywareBlaster then I guess it’s not a problem. Thank you for all the feedback. :)

  9. António Says:

    Me again.

I tried to uninstall/reinstall Spywareblaster with or without Autorun Eater on my PC but the problem persists. Nothing happens when I click the Spywareblaster icon , no message, no Spywareblaster screen, the wallpaper beeing the only visible thing. Windows XP task manager shows that spywareblaster.exe is working, it works for one/two minutes and suddenly disappears. Well, I think I will survive without Spywareblaster at least till next HDD formatting.

Thanks for trying to help me.

Old McDonald: Only the wallpaper? You mean no desktop icons at all or?

Sounds fishy to me if SpywareBlaster shuts down after a while without even showing its window. Could be a malware shutting it down. I’m using SpywareBlaster too and have no problems with it.

But if there’s anything else you would like me to help you with, do reply and remember to download v2.3 this Friday. :)

  10. António Says:

    Howdy from Portugal!
Thank you so much for your excellent prog which solved autorun.inf problem on my computer. After installation I choose fix task manager, regedit and folder options. Strangely since then Spywareblaster refuse to open. I like very much Spywareblaster and I need it. What can I do to fix this issue? (sorry for my bad English)

    Old McDonald: Hi there António,

We’re glad Autorun Eater solved your problems. I’m sure Autorun Eater did not disable Spywareblaster because it does not modify any data or settings related to Spywareblaster.

Is there any error message you’re getting when you try to open Spywareblaster? If you could include a screenshot, would be good too. Maybe you could try reinstalling Spywareblaster and see if the problem persists. I’ll try to help you with wherever possible.

Hope to hear from you soon, thank you!

Just wanted to say thanks for the program, found it very helpful in dealing with some malware issues, it suppressed most of the programs so I could deal with them, still having some issues, but compared to having my system crippled its much better! Thanks a bunch!

    Old McDonald: You’re welcome!

I’m glad it helped you deal with your malware issues. If there’s anything else, do feel free contact us. :)

  15. Kus Says:

i like this program, usefull for me. can the program withaout the goat sound?

    Old McDonald: Yes, you can.

If you don’t like the goat sound, you can always go to the installation folder(eg. C:\Program Files\Autorun Eater) and remove the ’sound.wav’ file or, rename it to something else like ’sound1.wav’, whichever you prefer.

We’re glad you like Autorun Eater! :)

  16. karil Says:

    yes, right..!!
what I meant is like u say..

… ‘Do not show hidden files and folders’ and ‘Show hidden files and folders’ is switched upside down? For example, when you click on the radio option to hide, the hidden files are shown, but when you choose to show, the hidden files are hidden? …

that is happened on my computer..
did I made mistake when I fix the Folder Option with Autorun Eater..?

hope u can solve my problem Old McDonald..
    thanks..

Old McDonald: Hmmm… that’s pretty strange. So far I’ve not encountered that problem but I’m sure it has nothing to do with Autorun Eater’s ‘Registry Fix’ function. You can refer to the registry changes made by ‘Registry Fix’ in the help file.

Maybe you can visit Kelly’s Korner(Windows XP) for more info on registry editing.

If that doesn’t solve your problem, please reply here or send us an email. Thank you! :)

  17. karil Says:

hi Old McDonald, i want to ask something.. hope u can help me..
(sorry if my english is not well)

several days ago, my computer had virus. the virus hide my file, and in folder option, the radio button on hide my file and folder is always selected even i choose show hidden file and folder.

after i clean the virus with anti-virus, in folder option is still choose hidden file and folder. so i used Autorun Eater to fix Folder Option.

then, the folder option is back to normal again, but the problem is the radio button between show hidden files and folder and hidden files and folder is swap/ do otherwise.

did i make mistake, or can i do something in regedit.
(it happened in 2 computers on my home)

i hope Old McDonald can help me . .

Old McDonald: Hi Karil, when you said that the options “the problem is the radio button between show hidden files and folder and hidden files and folder is swap/ do otherwise“, did you mean the radio button options ‘Do not show hidden files and folders’ and ‘Show hidden files and folders’ is switched upside down? For example, when you click on the radio option to hide, the hidden files are shown, but when you choose to show, the hidden files are hidden? Is that what you meant?

Or, did you mean, when you choose the radio option ‘Show hidden files and folders’, the radio option automatically jumps back to ‘Do not show hidden files and folders’?

I hope I didn’t confuse you, but if this isn’t what you meant, it would be good if you could email us a screenshot of your problem(some labels/descriptions would be good too).

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

It’s really great!!! Thanks a lot! I also wonder and have fun hearing the sound… It makes my laptop secure. Thanks again. More power to you all!

Old McDonald: Thank you for the compliments! We’re glad you like it and if there’s anything, please feel free to contact us. (As for the sound… if you get bored of hearing it, you can remove the ’sound.wav’ file). Have a great day! :)

  19. buckyfuller Says:

Just installed Autorun Eater. States that it is scanning @normal priority, yet no display of files scanned, nor recognition of devices that are docked (WD external hard drive with problem autorun.inf) while Autorun Eater is running.
Orange pylon icon is in system tray and a quick check of the taskmgr.exe shows both mcdonald.exe and billy.exe running (but neither using CPU).
What’s going on? The software has been highly lauded for the specific issue I’m having (autorun.inf issues on an external hard drive) but so far, nothing happening. Please help! Thanks. -b

Should also mention that I’m running Windows XP in safe-mode. (see above comment).
Also, upon docking WD external hard drive, Windows gave message balloon from system tray: Unrecognizable device…. your hardware may not perform….
External hard drive is viewable from cmd.exe, but when in explorer.exe running Autorun Eater, no such luck. Correct behavior? Is Autorun Eater scanning the drive?

    Old McDonald: Hi Jim.

I’ve merged both your comments to make it easier for me to reply.

Autorun Eater doesn’t actually scan the drives the way the anti-virus softwares do, with files being scanned displayed and all. It only scans or monitors the root directory of each drive(removable, fixed) for any suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ files which may be used to activate malwares when a user accesses the drive. The alert only appears if one is found and deleted which explains the low or non-existent CPU usage.

When you said you were facing this ‘autorun.inf’ problem, could you specify the details, like you can’t access the drive, or an error message is appearing? Your problem could be due to the external drive you’re trying to plug-in but is unrecognizable. Autorun Eater doesn’t perform any other task on the drive other than determining if a suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ file is present so that shouldn’t disable it.

Have you tried plugging the external drive on another computer? Is it recognized over there?

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.
