We have had quite a lot of difficulty with these viruses at my organisation.. the infection spreads so fast, and our antivirus software has not been sufficient to protect us.

This has become such an enourmous security risk, it exposes a huge flaw in the way Win XP handles removable devices. I am dissapointed yet again by Microsofts lack of basic security.

Thanks again for your excellent software!
    Yohans

Old McDonald: You’re welcome! We’re glad you found our small application effective. Do check this site in the near future for news and updates. :)

  2. Yohans Says:

Thank you very much for providing this excellent piece of software for free. Your software closes a fundamental flaw in Win XP.

One suggestion: an option to just rename the autorun.inf file on a memory stick (not to move/delete it). Reason: some staff have encrypted memory sticks that use autorun.inf to load legitimate software. I am worried that perhaps AutoRun Eater might perhaps disable this software by mistake.

Old McDonald: If the Autorun Eater’s removal method is set to the default(ask for confirmation), then there’s no worry about it accidentally removing the file. If a warning appears, you can just click on ‘Ignore’ if you’re really sure it is a legitimate autorun.inf file and no warning will appear again. This can also be undone if you choose not to ignore the file anymore.

thats great its aperfect solution ..it worked and helped to avoid loosing data

  5. fadi Says:

why dont you make autorun eater scan c: and d: for autorun.inf and delete them it will be solution for the infected computers

Old McDonald: Autorun Eater monitors ALL drives(except A:, B: and CD/DVD drives) so it does do what you said above.

  6. fadi Says:

hi..last week i have installed autorun eater v2.3 and it was working and deleting autorun.inf virus but yesterday i have istalled nod 32 antivirus system. once i plug a usb an alert window appear an say autorun.inf (file was moved to quarntrine) but usb is still infected and autorun eater didnt remove the autorun.inf file why? butb anyway autorun eater is avery helpful program thanxxxxxxxxx….

Old McDonald: NOD32 probably locked the file and removed it before Autorun Eater had the chance to warn you. If NOD32 has removed it, why do you think the pendrive is still infected? Have you scanned it using your AV?

  7. jhon Says:

thanxx… but would autorun eater be a antivirus in the future!!

Old McDonald: Nah, we don’t think so. We don’t want to recreate the wheel, furthermore we won’t have enough time and resources to maintain an antivirus software. :)

  8. unkown Says:

is autorun eater comptabile with windos vista

Old McDonald: It is, but the UAC in Vista may prevent the user from changing the settings under the tray menu. You may have to disable UAC temporarily in order to change any Autorun Eater settings. After changing the settings, you can re-enable UAC. No such problem is encountered on Windows 7 because the UAC’s security settings can be configured.

  9. unkown Says:

realy autorun is a solution for autorun.inf virus but what about a scanner for the usb for the other virses

Old McDonald: We do no have the time and resources to maintain an antivirus software. There are many excellent free as well as paid antivirus softwares that you can use in conjuction with Autorun Eater. :)

  10. Wes Says:

Well I assume it would never stop, as i click remove a few seconds later the autorun eater window re-appears giving me the same thing, over and over again. Any Yes, you are correct. AVG is picking up the files in the Backup folder. Says-Autorun backup. Not the application.

So I guess my issue is that I cannot seem to get these autoruns off the various drives. What is the cause of this. And what do I need to do in order to get them removed from my pen drives and camera memory stick? Is this also on my PC?

Here is the file that comes up in Autorun Eater:

    RECYCLER\S-1-6-21-2434476501-1644491937-600003330-1213\autorunme.exe

    Thanks for your help.

Old McDonald: Looks like your computer is already infected as described in this FAQ. AVG probably has not added it to its definition but there’s a solution on Trend Micro’s site that is similar to your problem. You can try scanning your computer in Safe Mode too.

To remove the autorun.inf files on your removable storage devices, install Autorun Eater on another clean computer, plug in the storage devices and Autorun Eater should clean it right away. Remember to also scan it with an updated antivirus and never click on suspicious files(.exe, .bat, .vbs, etc).

At the mean time, you can disable Autorun Eater on the infected computer temporarily and only re-enable it after the infection is removed.

  11. Wes Says:

I am having the issue were as I remove the suspicious Autorun file the Autorun Eater 2.3 window pops back up again. Never goes away. I tried running my AVG 8.5 scan, but still doing it. The only thing AVG pickup up during the scan was Autorun Eater strangely. Found it like 5 times.

Autorun eater is finding this autorun file on all 3 memory sticks and my digital camera. Could this be right? Is the Autorun file its finding maybe supposed to be there?? How do I know that it is in fact the bad one and not just the one that is there to bring up the autorun window in windows? Thanks for the help…

Old McDonald: When you say the warning window appears again and again, does it only appear for only 3 times or it never stops? Also when you said AVG picked up Autorun Eater, do you mean the application file itself or the autorun.inf files in the Autorun Backup folder? This information is important for us to determine your problem.

Storage devices like memory sticks and digital cameras normally do not require an autorun.inf file to bring up the autorun window so Autorun Eater is probably right by detecting it as suspicious. You could also copy the contents of the file and post it here for our reference.

Looking forward to your reply and have a great day! :)

I installed your software 2.3 edition. It detected autorun.inf right away. However, once I click on remove, the same message pop up again and when I check my pendrive, autorun.inf is still there (hidden)
Why your software is not functioning to both my pc n laptop?

Old McDonald: This matter has been asked many times, you can refer to the answer here: http://oldmcdonald.wordpress.com/frequently-asked-questions/#6

It is also included in the FAQ section of the Help file. Hope that helps. :)

  19. MarkZeroTwo Says:

    Good day mr. old mcdonald,

I found your autorun eater very helpful to me. It blocks all threatening autorun.inf to be executed in my pc.

I just have 2 concerns with your application:

    1. I am using McAfee as my AV for my PC. It quarantined the oldmcdonald.exe file because it is recognized as Generic!Artemis Trojan.

    2. Your application is working fine and blocks lots of autorun.inf. Unfortunately, It even blocks autorun.inf making usb to have an icon. My friend told me that she couldn’t safely remove her usb unless she paused her autorun eater. Here is my code inside her autorun.inf.

    [autorun]
    icon=iconfilename.ico

Old McDonald: I’ve informed McAfee about the false positive detection, not sure why is it taking so long for them to fix it…

Autorun Eater does not block the function of the autorun.inf file it you’re using it to change your pendrive icon only, as in the content of the file you provided. You have to pause Autorun Eater before ejecting the pendrive if you have a legitimate autorun.inf file in it because it all drives are monitored continuously.

I hope that answers your question , if not please feel free to reply. Thank you! :)

    Hi,

USB pendrives are widely used in my country (Vietnam). And that’s exactly they way those USB viruses/malwares are widely spread! Eventhough I was quite careful (even disabled autorun), my PCs still sometimes got infected because:
    - I let my friends use it without warning them about their USB pendrives :D
    - sometimes I myself, uhm, mistakenly opened the infected drives by double-clicking :D

I was always wondering why there hadn’t been just a simple tool for deleting those damn autorun.inf files.

And now, finally, I could find your Autorun Eater! Thank you, I no longer worry about those bastards!

PS: I have installed AE on PCs of everyone I know. My cousin was afraid when she saw that splash screen, she thought it was a virus, lol!

Old McDonald: I was thinking about the same thing as you too and tada… Autorun Eater is born. Made my life and so many other’s easier. :)

Thank you for recommending Autorun Eater to people you know and don’t forget to remove the malware file itself(preferably using an updated antivirus) because Autorun Eater doesn’t do that. Have a great day!
