False Positives

October 14, 2007

Don’t worry, this has nothing to do with Autorun Eater’s performance. Since Autorun Eater 1.0, it has been tagged by a few anti-virus softwares as a malware. But these are of course false positive results.

The following AVs detects Autorun Eater as a malware:

eSafe

7.0.15.0 2007.10.10 suspicious Trojan/Worm

Panda

9.0.0.4 2007.10.13 suspicious file

VBA32

3.12.2.4 2007.10.14 Trojan.Win32.Agent.bop

Webwasher-Gateway

6.0.1 2007.10.13 Worm.Win32.ModifiedUPX.gen!90 (suspicious)

Avast!

Win32:Agent-OBU

I’ve contacted all the tech support of all the affected AVs and they’ve fixed it.

Old McDonald’s Farm would like to assure you that no personal information is collected through this software nor does it contain any spyware, adware or viruses.

Drive A:\(floppy) Scanning Error Fixed

October 11, 2007

In the latest version of Autorun Eater(v2.0), there were feedbacks stating that there were errors scanning drive A:\ when a floppy wasn’t inserted.

The only way to fix this problem, I guess is to make Autorun Eater skip drive A:\. I did try another way that is to determine if a floppy is present or not but this only caused the drive to become noisy on and off so the former option is probably the best. Furthermore, more and more comps do not have drive A:\ these days.

Pros - No error messages when scan is started

Cons- Users are not protected from suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ file(s) on floppies.

Drives A: and B: can now be manually scanned starting from Autorun Eater v2.2.

Autorun Eater v2.0

October 8, 2007

Old McDonald’s Farm is proud to announce the release of Autorun Eater v2.0!

Autorun Eater’s main function remains the same but there are a few improvements to the scanning engine as well as some minor changes to the menu options and GUI.

Among the additions and changes are:

Added: 3 optional registry fixes(Task Manager, Regedit & Folder options).

Added: Users are now informed through a message box whenever a suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ file is removed.

Added: Backup copies of suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ file(s) are now created before the original copy is removed for easy recovery.

Added: Status tooltip to get tool info easily without right-clicking on tray icon.

Added: ‘Paused’ notifier that slides in/out from botton-right of screen when ‘Pause’ is activated.

Added: Confirmation message box when user clicks on ‘Delete Log’.

Removed: ‘Keyboard Hotkeys’ label under tray menu options, but ‘Pause’ hotkey still works as usual.

Changed: Improved scanning engine. Now only certain suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ files are removed depending on a few criterias. CD-ROM drives are now left alone because it is impossible to remove any files on a CD/DVD. So this tool will NOT protect you from malicious CDs/DVDs.

Changed: Added drive label to the scan results log file for easier reference.

Changed: ‘About’ window has evolved from a mundane message box to a cooler GUI window with scrolling credits, haha.

Changed: HTML help file converted to CHM format to include more information and improved readability.

Changed: Certain traytips have been edited for uniformity.

With this newer version, it is expected to perform better with the bugs in Autorun Eater v1.0 eliminated. This version is expected to be more effective and user-friendly.

Autorun Eater v1.0

September 26, 2007

Introducing to you Autorun Eater. Autorun Eater is NOT an anti-virus nor does it pretend to be one. Autorun Eater is meant to work side-by-side with your AV application.

As more and more malwares resort to ‘autorun.inf’ file tactics, there has been a need for such a tool, especially for new users. Of course there are other ways to avoid the ‘autorun.inf’ malware trap such as right-clicking-explore, but how many are actually aware of such a method.

Wouldn’t it be better if it was already deleted even before you access the infected drive?

What are some of the features of Autorun Eater?

1. Scan and remove suspicious ‘autorun.inf’ files found in the root directory of drives, A-Z, in real-time
2. Hotkey enabled to toggle scan
3. Start, Stop or Pause scan
4. Scan priority(normal/high)
5. Scan results are logged
6. Add and remove from startup entry

And most importantly, it’s free!

No fancy GUIs but it works!
